Class Business
1.  The Helping Hands Committee met right before SS and brought the following recommendation to the class:  that we give $500 to World Venture as they seek to raise $200,000 for missions in Myanmar.  The missionaries who run this are friends of the Hatfields, and in the past, we've helped them as they built up a mission in Kenya.  Their plans for Myanmar are to build a church, school, conference center, and orphanage on land that they have already purchased.  Our contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a donor.  Mary Katherine presented this to the class, discussion was called for (there was none), vote was taken, and it passed.
2.  I presented the Christmas opportunity from Local Missions (to help w/Charlotte Rescue Mission), saying that Gaye had emailed me that we have enough funds in our Class Account to help w/this.  The class agreed that it was something worth exploring, and so i asked for volunteer(s) to delve into it a bit more.  Ellen graciously agreed to contact our church liason to see how we might help.  [Thanks, Ellen!]

H&H
1.  Speaking of Gaye...  She and Larry have hit a rough patch, healthwise, of late.  She had another scan last week and turns out she doesn't have the kind of tumor that thought she had -- which is good:  docs don't seemed as concerned about this one.  But... they also found a small hole in her L lung!  She had it x-rayed two days, back-to-back, and there seemed to be no change in it, so they are hoping that it is healing on its own.  She just needs to rest and use her oxygen more!
Larry's had a lot of trouble w/pain and weakness in his legs.  An MRI last week showed that there are pblms w/a disk in the lower part of his spine.  He's on steroids and was to have seen the spine doc yest'y...
Many of you have been "in the loop" and have been helping w/food and transportation.  Thanks so much!  And if you need any more help, just sing out!
2.  We were glad to have Frank back, after that n'bor's tree fell on his house!  He had just had his own trees trimmed not long ago...  He shared a phone # of the "great tree guy" who's been taking care of him and Pat:  704-573-8700 -- sorry, didn't catch the guy's name.
3.  Linda reported that Don's doc said that his new valve is working "wonderfully well."  We're so glad to hear that and hope that Don continues to rest and recupe.  We miss having him in SS.
4.  Rick has a new g'daughter!  Daughter Helen gave birth on Oct 18th.  [i'm sorry i didn't get all the stats -- just contact Rick, i'm sure he's more than willing to share...]
5.  Oh, we were happy to have the Myers' daughter Peyton Gehron and her hubby Jake w/us in class as Dennis finished up his series on Adam Hamilton's UNAFRAID.
6.  And i just saw on fb a few hours ago that Barbara and Mark Barden's son Chris survived a scary run-in w/a deer on 485, while going 70mph!  Looks like the car was totaled, after it spun around (a few times?).  Glad Chris is ok!

Anything else?

Happy H'ween!

  • Pocket Dictionary
  • Inspirational Tokens (carry in pocket, key chain, etc.)
  • T-Shirts (white – M, L, XL)

If your Sunday School class or small group would like to provide one of these items, please let our Local Outreach Committee liaison for Charlotte Rescue Mission, Kathryn Melton, know at kathryn.r.melton@gmail.com.  She’s also happy to answer any questions you might have.  Please know that these spots do book up, so sign up early for the best choice of items.  Thanks!

20181020 SS Update

Dear Ownbey Family,

Another great lesson from DENNIS MYERS, using the Adam Hamilton dvd series UNAFRAID.

Not sure i included the neat acronym he shared w/us the other week (and today)...

Face your fears w/faith
Examine your assumptions in light of faith
Attack your anxietes w/action
Release your cares to God

Next week we'll explore "Aging, Illness, Dying, and Fear of God".

Dennis also included two scriptures that Hamilton encourages us to remember... especially during election time:
Matthew 7:12 -- "In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you..."
James 1:19 -- "...Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry..."

H&H
Saw a posting on fb by LORI (GROGAN) BLUMBERG:  daughter LINDSAY has passed the bar (in Va?).  Lindsay is one of MARILEA GROGAN's g'daughters.

Stay warm, everyone!

Peace,

201810114 class news schedules lessons ace cal mary katherine ..thanks to simon

018 11:45 AM

Dear SS Family,

1.  SIMON SPENCE presented a wonderful lesson on his pilgrimages -- one w/son Jacob and one "alone" -- hiking El Camino (Spain).  We also welcomed 9 other members of his SS class to hear him.

2.  MARY KATHERINE VASS shared w/us that she has had a pacemaker implanted!  She is doing well, tho' still a bit tired at times, but is looking forward to returning to swimming soon... and she DOES seem to have more color in her cheeks  :-)

3.  ELEANOR CHESSON announced that CAL is a now a candidate for a cochlear implant.  We hope that he will be able to have THAT procedure done in the not too distant future.

4.  Last week i forgot to say that ACE WALKER had returned to class after having surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from under his right eye -- or maybe it had been on his eyelid...  [my eyes are watering as i type this... no matter which it was!]  He is doing well.

UPCOMING LESSONS
DENNIS MYERS will continue Adam Hamilton's UNAFRAID, which he started last Sunday.
On Oct 21st, we'll look at session 3 -- among topics covered is FEAR OF DISAPPOINTING OTHERS
On the 28th, we'll look at session 5 -- those topics include FEAR OF AGING and FEAR OF GOD

ELLEN ERICKSON and i attended the SS Curriculum Mtg last Sunday night.  There we learned that the BUILDERS CLASS is having an "outside" speaker come on Nov 4th to speak on AGING WITH GRACE AND PURPOSE.  Their class is inviting others to join them, and Ellen and i thought it a good idea to do so.  Dr. CHARLES EDWARDS is a gerontologist and founder of The Memory Center of Charlotte.  The info going out in the CORNERSTONE says that the class will start at 9:30, in room 103.  [Builders meets in 103-104, and IF they open up that entire side, the class that meets in 105 will need a space.  I THINK that's actually Simon's class...  At any rate, they will meet in our room (110) while we "travel" to meet w/Builders.  And there is ALSO the possibility that Builders will need more space than those three rooms.  If THAT's the case, they will most probably need to meet in the unfinished part of the basement.  Details are being ironed out, and i'll keep you posted as i learn more.]

NOVEMBER
Presiding Officer -- D.SAVELL
4th -- meet w/BUILDERS CLASS
11th -- TBA
18th -- RACHEL HUMPHRIES will come and speak w/us about Refugee Support Services
25th -- TBA

23d -- Advent #4 -- TBA

Dear Class,

I highly recommend the opportunity to listen to Dr. Chuck Edwards.  His knowledge surrounding all forms of dementia and his care for patients is exceptional.
His personal experience as a son whose parents have or had Alzheimer's Dementia brings to us, The Family, a blanket of understanding, comfort and direction that is hard to find.  He has been a life saver to our entire family for 5 years.
I wish I could join you (on Nov 4th), however, a respite opportunity thru Hospice is enabling me
to go visit Alison in Indiana that week-end.  We are continually blessed that Trudy remains very healthy and always happy.

Miss you guys, Bert
